Rune Away
A downloadable game for Windows
In this game inspired by "The Painted Man" (Peter V. Brett), play as a sorcerer trying to stop demons at night from getting out of the ground to feast on villagers. Your only weapon is your grimoire in which you may draw elemental runes to seal the demons. But be carful ! Each demon need a specific rune which doesn't last for ever. Be quick, precise and keen to survive to the night...
Rune Away is part of a one-week workshop at the ENJMIN about alternative controlers. Except the "R" key you press to restart the game, everything is controlled by your drawings on the dark board.
Because this game needs a physical setup, not everybody can play it. However if you happen to have a dark board, some chalks, a second screen, and a webcam, here are some instructions to play this game properly (Also, this game is in french, but you should figure out quite quickly how it works) :
- First, wire everything together : Connect the second screen to your PC and a webcam. Make sure your screen sharing mode is on "Extend this displays". Here is a tutorial about how to do that.
- Now the camera setup : place your board on a flat surface and make sure it stay in place. Place your webacm above your board, close enough to see the board, but far enough to not disturb you when you play. We recommand you to use OBS to have a full image of your board only (the AI recognation will be better this way !). Check if there is enough light to see the board correctly (add a lamp if needed).
- If you decide to use OBS, you should configure it this way :
1- First open OBS, and start working on an empty scene.
2- Then create a new "Video Capture Device".
3- Resize the view as needed. All the grey-striped parts will not be shown. (this example is not the best one, try to only have the board and nothing else on the screen)
4- Now just press "Start Virtual Camera", it will display the view you created on step 3. It'll be helpful when you run the game (make sure to do this before you start the game !)
- Now, if everything is set up correctly, you should have something like this, minus the box :
- To play, you should first open the file "app.js" (TM-Module>app>app.js) with Processing (you can download Processing here) and execute the script. Be sure to have the p5 extension installed !
- A new window should open itself in your browser. Choose your camera (or OBS Virtual Camera if you use OBS), then click on "authorize".
- then run "run.sh" so the IA could update what it's seeing (TM-Module>run.sh). Keep this script running as long as you're playing.
- If the setup works correcty, a text should appear under the video, and update what the IA is seeing.
- Keep this page open and active on your secondary screen, and then play "InTheMoodFor.exe" on your main screen.
-Now you should be able to play. If rune detection doesn't work, please check every step to see if you didn't forget anything. If you encounter an unexpected problem, we would be happy to answer any of your concern !
- If you try to play at home we would be really glad to have pictures of your setup !
Enjoy !
